Measuring Progress as a Hybrid Athlete
[THE SHORT ANSWER]
Track four signals and keep them separate: strength as an estimated one-rep-max trend across your main lifts, endurance as threshold pace or FTP with its confidence, body composition as trend weight alongside a waist measurement, and recovery against your own baseline. Any one of them can be explained away on any given week. The information is in the pattern — specifically in what happens when two of them point in opposite directions, which is the situation a single blended score would hide and the situation a hybrid athlete lives in.
The four signals
Strength: e1RM trend, not any session
An estimated one-rep max converts sets at different weights and rep counts onto one axis. Across a block your working sets vary for reasons that have nothing to do with strength — a deload, a bad night, a change in exercise order — and the slope of the e1RM line is what survives all of it.
Use the trend, never a single session. And record reps in reserve, because without it a rep-only log cannot distinguish twelve reps at 0 RIR from twelve at 4 RIR, and those are opposite pieces of information. The calculator.
Meaningful movement: 0.5 to 2% per week early in a block, tapering. Flat for three weeks alongside a second fatigue signal is a deload trigger, not a programming failure.
Endurance: threshold, with its confidence
One number per discipline: pace per mile or watts. Every zone is a fraction of it, and it carries a confidence label because a bare number you cannot check is a number you should not build on.
Meaningful movement: 1 to 3% per training block. Threshold moves in weeks, unlike VO2 max, which is largely a ceiling and which your watch estimates with wide error.
Never blend run and ride, and never blend endurance with strength. Why.
Body composition: trend weight AND waist
Two measurements, because either alone is ambiguous.
Trend weight is an exponentially weighted average — raw scale weight swings four pounds across two days on identical body composition. Waist-to-height is a cheap, repeatable proxy for abdominal fat that requires no equipment and no assumption.
Together they disambiguate:

Body fat percentage from a scale, a caliper or a photo is not a fifth signal. The measurement error on all of them exceeds the change you are looking for over any reasonable window, and adding a noisy number to a clean pair makes the pair worse.
Recovery: against your own baseline
HRV, resting heart rate and sleep, each against your own thirty-day history. Never against a population — an HRV of 48 ms is good or bad only relative to your own record.
What to act on: the trend, not the day. One low reading is one bad night. A week of depressed readings alongside a second signal is a pattern, and two independent signals firing at once is a better deload trigger than any calendar.
Reading the disagreements
This is the part that matters, and it is the part that a single score deletes.

Row two is the classic hybrid failure and it has a specific cause: easy runs run too hard, converting free aerobic volume into hard sessions that appear nowhere in the plan. The full diagnosis.
Row five is the one to catch quickly. Rising weight with flat performance and falling recovery is not a bulk. It is an overreach with extra calories on it, and the fix is a deload rather than a diet change.
Timescales
Reading a signal faster than it moves is how people talk themselves out of a programme that was working.

The most common error is treating a two-week plateau as a stall. Fourteen days is exactly one maintenance window and well inside normal variation for water, glycogen and gut content. Three consecutive windows pointing the same way is a signal. One is weather.
Progress photos
The scale and the tape both miss things photos catch. They are also the only record that survives your memory, which is unreliable in a specific and consistent direction — you remember looking worse than you did before a block and better than you did after it.
Consistency is the entire value: same light, same time of day, same distance, same poses, same state of fed-ness. An inconsistent photo series is worse than none, because it produces apparent changes that are lighting.
Base archives every progress photo into an album in your own photo library rather than only in app storage, because the operating system erases everything an app stores when the app is deleted — and a photo series is the one record you genuinely cannot reconstruct. How that works.
What not to track
- Body fat percentage from consumer tools. Error exceeds the signal.
- Daily weight as a decision input. That is what the trend is for.
- A blended fitness score. It cannot distinguish "both improved" from "one ate the other".
- Session RPE alone. Useful as context, useless as a progress measure — it says how you felt, not what you did.
- Streaks that punish rest days. Rest days are training.
What to do next
Write down where all four signals sit today. In four weeks, write them down again and find the row in the disagreement table that matches. That is your diagnosis, and it is more actionable than any single number could be.

Should I take progress photos?
Yes, in consistent conditions — same light, same time of day, same poses, same distance. Photos catch changes the scale cannot and they are the only record that survives your memory of what you looked like, which is unreliable in a specific and consistent direction.
What if my strength is up but my endurance is down?
That is a real trade and it needs a decision rather than a fix. Either the endurance work is going in at the wrong intensity — check whether your easy days are actually easy — or the block is genuinely strength-biased and the endurance decline is the price you agreed to pay. Deciding which is more useful than trying to reverse it blindly.
