Terms of Service

Is Base a medical device?

No. Base is a personal training log. It makes no diagnostic claim and gives no medical advice.

[TL;DR]

These are the terms for using Base, the hybrid training app for lifting, endurance and nutrition described on the rest of this site. Read them alongside the privacy page, which is the authoritative statement of what data goes where; this page is the authoritative statement of everything else — the account, the licence, the beta status, and the disclaimer that matters most for an app built on health data: Base is not a medical device.

By creating an account or installing Base, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

Who this agreement is with

Base is operated by the team behind trybase.app. Questions about this agreement, or anything else, go to hello@trybase.app.

Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to create a Base account. By creating one, you are representing that you meet that age and that the information you give — your name, email, and the training and nutrition numbers you enter — is your own and accurate.

Base is single-athlete software: one account, one person's training log. It is not built for a coach to log on behalf of an athlete or for a household to share a login, and accounts may not be shared, sold, or transferred.

The beta

Base currently ships through TestFlight on iOS and a closed or open track on Google Play. That means:

  • It is free. There is no charge to use Base during the beta, and no payment information is collected to grant access.
  • It can change without notice. A beta build may add, remove or break a feature between versions, and TestFlight and Play beta builds both expire on their own schedule set by Apple and Google, not by Base.
  • It can end. The beta program can be closed at any time. If Base moves to a paid, generally available release, this page and the app itself will say so before anything is charged — a beta account is never silently converted into a bill.

None of the disclaimers or limitations further down this page are softened by the app being free. They apply the same way to a beta build as they would to a shipped one.

Your account

You are responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials secure and for everything that happens under your account. Tell us at hello@trybase.app if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.

Your email address and password are handled by the authentication provider; Base never sees or stores your password. See /privacy for exactly what is stored against your account and where.

Your data, and the licence you give Base to run it

The training log you build — sets, sessions, food entries, bodyweight, measurements and progress photos — is yours. Creating that data in Base gives Base only the limited licence needed to store it, sync it to your account, and compute the numbers the app shows you (trend weight, TDEE, Recovery Score, session grades and the rest). Base does not license your data onward for advertising, does not sell it, and does not use it to train a model shared with other users. /privacy is the complete list of every place a piece of your data can go and why.

Deleting your account revokes that licence immediately: everything is permanently erased from your phone and from the server, and the erasure cannot be undone. Export your data first if you want to keep a copy of it.

Health data and the disclaimer that matters most

Base is not a medical device. It makes no diagnostic claim and gives no medical, nutritional or exercise advice tailored to a medical condition. Every score in the app — Recovery, Sleep, readiness, the calorie and macro targets, the endurance zones — is a training tool computed from consumer wearable data and the numbers you enter, not a clinical measurement.

Do not use Base to diagnose, treat, or make decisions about a medical condition, and do not disregard or delay professional medical advice because of anything Base shows you. If a number in the app concerns you, or if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, are recovering from injury or illness, or are otherwise unsure whether hard training is appropriate for you, talk to a doctor before you rely on it. Training and nutrition carry inherent physical risk that no app can remove; you are choosing to take on that risk by training at all, and Base's role is limited to logging and arithmetic.

The AI features

Two coaching features and one food scanner in Base call Google's Gemini API using an API key you supply yourself in Settings. Output from those features — a suggested session, a plate's estimated macros, a coach's reply — is a machine-generated estimate, not verified nutritional or exercise advice, and you are responsible for checking it against your own judgment before you rely on it, the same as you would for any number you entered by hand. Leaving the API key blank turns each feature off; nothing is sent and nothing is estimated.

Acceptable use

Use Base only for its own purpose: logging and understanding your own training and nutrition. In particular, do not:

  • Attempt to access another person's account or data without authorization
  • Reverse engineer, decompile or extract the app's source beyond what your device's own operating system permits
  • Use automated means to scrape, flood or otherwise abuse the app's servers or the third-party services it calls (Supabase, PostHog, Gemini, Open Food Facts, the OS map service)
  • Upload content — a photo, a note, a chat message to the coach — that is unlawful, infringes someone else's rights, or that you do not have the right to share
  • Use Base in a way that could disable, overburden or impair it for other athletes

No warranty

Base is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranty of any kind, express or implied — including, to the fullest extent the law allows, any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. A derived number can be wrong if the data behind it is wrong or missing (a HealthKit or Health Connect read that returns nothing, a food logged with the wrong portion, a watch that dropped GPS mid-run); Base tells you when that happens rather than guessing, but it cannot guarantee the accuracy of every number it shows.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Base and the people who build it are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or any loss of data, training progress, or profits, arising from your use of or inability to use the app — including any physical injury arising from training decisions made using information from the app. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid to use Base in the twelve months before the claim, which during the free beta is zero.

Nothing in this section limits liability for something the law does not allow to be limited, such as gross negligence or willful misconduct where your jurisdiction prohibits excluding it.

Termination

You can stop using Base and delete your account at any time from Settings. Base may suspend or terminate an account that violates these terms, most importantly the acceptable-use section above, with notice where practical.

Changes to these terms

This page may be updated as Base changes. The date at the top is the last revision. Continuing to use Base after an update means you accept the new terms; a change substantial enough to matter — a paid tier, a new required permission, a new use of your data — will also be surfaced in the app itself, not left to a silent date change on this page.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute not otherwise resolved will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Massachusetts.

What to do next

For exactly what data leaves your phone and where it goes, read the privacy page. For the reasoning behind the numbers these terms disclaim, why every number shows its math is the fuller argument.

Questions people actually ask.

Is Base a medical device?

No. Base is a personal training log. It makes no diagnostic claim and gives no medical advice. Recovery, sleep and readiness scores are training tools built on consumer wearable data, and consumer wearable data is not clinical data. Talk to a doctor about anything a number here worries you, not the app.

Is Base free right now?

Yes. Base is in TestFlight and Play beta and there is no charge to use it. If paid plans launch later, this page and the App Store or Play Store listing will say so before any charge is made, and nothing you already logged is held hostage behind a paywall.

What happens to my data if I delete my account?

Deleting your account permanently erases your account and everything in it, from your phone and from the server. It is immediate and it cannot be undone. Export your data first if you want to keep a copy — see /privacy for exactly what that produces.

Who owns the training data I log?

You do. Your sets, sessions, food log, bodyweight and photos are yours. Base's licence to that data is limited to what running the app and syncing it to your account requires, and you can take it with you at any time through Export.

Can Base change these terms?

Yes, and the date at the top of this page will change when it does. Continuing to use Base after an update means you accept the new terms. A change big enough to matter — a paid tier, a new required permission — would also show up in the app itself, not just here.
