Does Hevy Track Running or Cardio?
Can you log cardio in Hevy?
You can add a cardio exercise with a duration and optionally a distance, entered by hand.
[THE SHORT ANSWER]
Only as a number you type in yourself. You can add a cardio entry with a duration to a Hevy workout. What you cannot do is have that information affect anything — and that is the part that actually costs you.
What Hevy does with cardio
You can add a cardio exercise to a session and record a duration, sometimes a distance. It appears in your history as an entry.
That is where it ends. Specifically, Hevy:
- Does not read your runs from Apple Health, Google Fit or Strava. The sync is one-way — Hevy writes your lifting out, it does not read your endurance in.
- Does not model endurance load. No acute or chronic load, no ramp rate, no minutes trend.
- Does not use it in any chart or suggestion. The cardio entry is inert.
So the honest answer is that Hevy is a strength log with a text field where cardio could go.
Why this is not a minor omission
If you only lift, it is not a problem at all and Hevy remains the best pure logger available. Where it sits against the alternatives.
If you lift and run seriously, it breaks three things.
Your recoverable volume is not a constant. The weekly hard-set count you can recover from and adapt to depends on your whole recovery budget, and endurance training draws on the same budget. The concurrent-training research is clear that interference is dose-dependent — total load has a ceiling, and exceeding it costs you on both sides. What that literature actually found.
Hevy's charts show your volume climbing. They cannot show that your mileage climbed at the same time, which is the context that decides whether the volume is productive or excessive. Count what you are actually carrying.
Deload timing needs both signals. Hevy can show you a stalled lift. It cannot show that your endurance minutes ramped 40 percent over three weeks, which is frequently the actual cause of the stall. Reading a plateau as "needs more volume" when it is "needs less total load" is the standard mistake. When a deload is genuinely indicated.
Session order and spacing. Whether today's squats are realistic depends on yesterday's long run, and vice versa. There is a right order and a wrong one.
And the one that is not about training at all:
Energy. A week with four lifting sessions and 40 miles of running is a substantially larger energy demand than a lifting-only week. Being 400 kcal a day short of it turns a good programme into accumulated fatigue. Hevy has no nutrition layer, so nothing flags it. How much difference the running makes.
The comparison
| Hevy | Base | |
|---|---|---|
| Set, rep and load logging | Excellent | Yes, with RIR |
| Cardio entry | Manual duration, inert | Prescribed and graded |
| Reads runs from health data | No | Yes |
| Endurance load model | No | Ramp rate on minutes |
| Weekly hard sets per muscle | Basic | Yes, fractional |
| Endurance load affects volume advice | No | Yes |
| Deload trigger | No | Two-signal reactive |
| Nutrition | No | Measured, adaptive |
| Recovery scoring | No | Own baseline |
| Free tier | Generous | Beta |
What to actually do
If your running is casual — a couple of easy runs a week, no goal — Hevy is fine and this is not your problem. Log the lifting properly and ignore the cardio field.
If your running is serious, you have three options and they are all legitimate:
- Two apps, and you do the reconciliation. Hevy plus Strava or Intervals.icu. Accurate records on both sides, no shared view, and the cross-discipline decisions stay with you. What that reconciliation actually costs.
- Garmin Connect for both. It holds running properly and lifting shallowly — no load per set, no RIR, no e1RM trend. What Connect does and does not model.
- One ledger. A system where the endurance load is an input to the lifting volume target, and the recovery signal reads both. What that looks like.
Short version: Hevy will happily let you type in that you ran, and then do nothing with it. If the reason you are asking is that your lifts stalled when your mileage went up, the missing number is not a cardio field — it is a volume target that knows about the miles.
Questions
Can you log cardio in Hevy?
You can add a cardio exercise with a duration and optionally a distance, entered by hand. Hevy does not read runs from your health data, does not model endurance load, and does not use any of it in its charts or recommendations.
Does Hevy sync with Apple Health or Strava?
Hevy writes workouts out to Apple Health so your lifting appears there. It does not read your runs in from Apple Health or Strava, so the traffic is one-way and your endurance training stays invisible inside Hevy.
Why does it matter that Hevy cannot see my running?
Because the amount of lifting volume you can recover from depends on your total training load. During a heavy running block your recoverable volume is lower than in an off-season, and any volume figure computed from lifting data alone will be too high on exactly the weeks that matter.
What is the best lifting app that also tracks running?
Very few exist, which is the actual gap rather than an oversight. Garmin Connect holds both and logs lifting shallowly. Base holds both and treats them as separate capacities sharing one recovery and energy budget. Most other apps are structurally single-discipline.
Should I just use two apps?
It works and most people do it. The limit is that no number requiring both halves ever gets computed — a deload trigger reading both fatigue sources, a volume target that responds to your mileage, or a calorie target that knows a long run happened.
