Half Marathon Training While Lifting
[THE SHORT ANSWER]
The half marathon is the most hybrid-friendly road distance there is. Peak volume is typically 25 to 35 miles a week rather than the 45 to 60 of a full marathon block, which leaves enough recovery capacity and a small enough energy cost that building muscle stays on the table — three lifting sessions a week and a modest surplus are both workable. That is genuinely not true of the full, and it is the reason the half is the distance to pick if you want both goals to move.
Why the half works and the full does not
The difference is volume, and the arithmetic is straightforward.
Running costs roughly 1 kcal per kilogram per kilometre net of resting. For a 170 lb (77 kg) runner:

Five hundred and thirty calories a day is a large number and a manageable one — it is an extra meal. Nine hundred and seventy-five is a different order of problem, and it is where sustaining a surplus stops being realistic alongside the fatigue.
The fatigue side follows the same shape. Thirty miles across four or five runs, most of them easy, leaves recovery capacity for three lifting sessions at 12 to 15 fractional sets per muscle — which is the low end of the productive hypertrophy range, not a maintenance dose.
A twelve-week structure

Three hard sessions a week through the build: one lower-body lift, and two quality runs. The other lifts are moderate; the other runs are easy.
The week
A shape that satisfies the constraints without requiring a life rearrangement:

The lower-body lift is Monday and the long run is Saturday: five days apart, with the quality run following the lift by a day rather than sharing legs with it. Friday's lift is deliberately moderate because Saturday is long.
Six-hour separation on Wednesday: same-session concurrent training carries an effect size around −0.66, and six or more hours drops it to about −0.10. The detail.
The thing that will actually go wrong
Your easy runs will be too fast.
At half marathon volume most of your mileage is easy, and easy means 1.20 to 1.35 times threshold pace. If your threshold is 7:00 per mile, that is 8:24 to 9:27 — which feels wrong, and which most runners ignore by twenty to forty seconds per mile.
The cost is specific: an easy run at moderate pace stops being a nearly-free aerobic session and becomes a hard session that appears nowhere in your plan and was subtracted from nothing. Your week goes from three hard sessions to six, and your lifting degrades for a reason you will attribute to the running volume rather than to the running intensity.
This is the single largest recoverable cost most hybrid athletes carry, and fixing it is free. Why easy runs drift.
Lifting that helps the running
Strength work improves running economy — a lower metabolic cost at a given pace — which is the best-evidenced performance benefit available from the gym for a runner.
What produces it is heavy and explosive work, not high-rep circuits. Squats, hinges, single-leg work and jumps at moderate-to-heavy loads. The instinct to make gym work look like running by doing high-rep light circuits gets it backwards: you already have the endurance stimulus, and what the gym adds is the thing running does not provide.
Keep upper body in. It costs almost nothing in running terms — different tissue, minimal local competition — and it is where a runner's muscle is most easily lost.
Eating for it
Set protein from bodyweight at 1.0 g per pound, fat at roughly 25% of calories, and let carbohydrate take the remainder. That ordering means a week that ramps from 20 to 32 miles automatically produces a higher carbohydrate number without you recalculating anything.
Measure maintenance rather than predicting it. Your expenditure will rise by several hundred calories a day between week twelve and week four, and an activity dropdown cannot see that. The method.
If you are running a surplus, keep it small — +200 to +250. A trained lifter's usable surplus is only about 179 kcal a day, and a larger one during a running block just adds fat you will carry over thirteen point one miles.
Race week
Keep lifting. One light full-body session early in the week, nothing that produces soreness, last heavy lower-body work about ten days out.
Stopping entirely removes a stimulus your body is adapted to at exactly the moment you want nothing to change.
What to do next
Pull up your last four easy runs and compare their pace against 1.20 to 1.35 times your threshold. That check takes two minutes and it is the highest-value thing available in half marathon training — everything else in this plan assumes the easy runs are easy.
